Do you make custom or personalized metal art?
Yes. Custom work is a big part of what we do. If you have an idea, special size, name, monogram, business logo, or one-of-a-kind design in mind, contact us before ordering. We’ll talk through the details and let you know what’s possible.
Once a custom or personalized piece has entered production, changes may not be possible, so we’ll make sure the important details are confirmed before we begin.
How long does it take to make my order?
Most of our pieces are made to order in our North Carolina shop. Typical production time is about 5–10 business days, although busy seasons and custom projects can take a little longer.
If an order is going to require additional time, we’ll let you know.
Can your metal art be displayed outdoors?
Most of our pieces are suitable for both indoor and outdoor display. They are finished with a durable powder-coated finish to help protect the steel.
Like any finished metal product, long-term exposure to weather, moisture, salt air, and direct sunlight can eventually affect the finish. Covered or partially sheltered outdoor locations will generally provide the longest-lasting appearance.
If you’re unsure whether a particular piece is appropriate for where you plan to display it, just ask us.
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
The design will be the same, but handcrafted finishes can vary slightly from piece to piece.
Our patina finishes are applied by hand, so differences in color, shading, texture, and pattern are normal and are part of what makes each piece unique. No two hand-finished pieces will ever be exactly alike.
What should I do if my order arrives damaged?
We package every order carefully, but occasionally a package can be damaged during shipping.
If that happens, please contact us as soon as possible and send photos of both the damaged item and the packaging. Please keep the packaging until we’ve had a chance to review everything.
We’ll work with you to determine the best way to make it right.
What if tracking says my package was delivered, but I don’t have it?
First, check around your property, including porches, side doors, garages, and other places a carrier may have left the package. It’s also worth checking with other household members and nearby neighbors.
Occasionally a carrier may scan a package as delivered shortly before it actually arrives, so giving it a little additional time can help.
If it still hasn’t appeared, contact the carrier using your tracking number. You’re also welcome to contact us and we’ll help however we reasonably can.
What is your return and cancellation policy?
We want you to be happy with your purchase. If there is a problem with your order, contact us within 7 days of delivery so we can discuss the situation.
Custom and personalized items generally cannot be returned unless there is a defect or we made an error.
Standard items should be returned in their original condition. Unless the item is defective or we made a mistake, return shipping is the buyer’s responsibility.
If you need to cancel an order, contact us as quickly as possible. Once production has begun, cancellation may no longer be possible.
Can you make a different size?
Usually, yes.
Because we make our products ourselves, we can often create sizes that aren’t shown in the regular product options. Some designs have practical size limitations, but we’re happy to discuss what you need.
Can you create something from my own idea?
Absolutely.
We’ve created custom metal art from sketches, photographs, logos, customer ideas, and sometimes nothing more than a description of what someone had in mind.
Tell us what you’re thinking, the approximate size you need, where the piece will be displayed, and any other details you have. We’ll let you know what we can do and provide a quote.
How is Back 40 Metal Worx different from mass-produced metal decor?
Every piece we sell is made by us in our own North Carolina shop. We design the work, plasma cut the steel, hand-finish it, powder coat it, package it, and ship it ourselves.
We’re a small family business, not an importer or fulfillment company. When you contact Back 40 Metal Worx, you’re talking directly with the people making your order.
