At Back 40 Metal Worx, our job is to help take that idea and turn it into steel.
It Starts With Your Idea
You do not need to have a finished design before contacting us.
Some customers come to us with a detailed sketch or an existing logo. Others may only have a general idea of what they want. We have even had customers draw something with a Sharpie on a napkin, take a picture of it with their phone, and send that to us as a starting point.
That is perfectly fine.
The process begins with understanding what the piece needs to represent, where it will be displayed, and what size and style will work best.
Custom metal art should feel personal. It should look like it belongs to the person, family, business, or space it was created for.
Turning an Idea Into a Design
Once we understand the concept, the next step is creating a design that can actually be made from steel.
A design that looks good on paper does not always translate directly into something that can be plasma cut. Small details, narrow sections, lettering, and open areas all have to be considered carefully.
The goal is to keep the character of the original idea while creating a design that is strong, attractive, and practical to produce.
For personalized pieces, this may include names, dates, business information, or other meaningful details.
Sometimes the design process is very straightforward. Other times it takes a little back-and-forth to get everything just right.
Either way, the goal is the same: turn the original idea into something that will work well in steel.
From Design to Steel
After the design is finalized, it is prepared for CNC plasma cutting.
The design is cut from steel in our North Carolina shop, creating the basic shape of the finished piece.
But cutting is only part of the process.
The raw steel still has to be cleaned, prepared, and finished before it becomes the piece the customer will eventually hang on a wall, display in a business, or give as a gift.
Hand Finishing Makes Each Piece Unique
One of the things that gives handcrafted metal art its character is the finishing process.
Our pieces are individually cleaned and finished by hand. Depending on the design and the look the customer wants, a finished piece may feature one of our hand-applied patina finishes or a durable powder-coated finish.
Because much of the finishing work is done by hand, no two patina pieces are exactly alike.
Subtle variations in color, texture, and shading are part of what makes each piece unique.
